“I purchased Letters to Lori, desiring to know more about real life in the Appalachians after reading Christy. I was not disappointed.
Barbara League did a phenomenal job putting all of Opal’s stories into an enjoyable and readable format. Reading through the book is like sitting on a couch across from Opal Myers and having her tell you stories about her life. You learn what it was like growing up and living in the Appalachians, how the Ebenezer Mission affected Opal’s community specifically, and an up-close look at the education system at that time (as Opal was both a student and teacher).
I particularly enjoyed the stories of Opal’s childhood (and the lives of her students) – learning the games they played, the thankfulness they had for everything, and even the jokes they played on one another. And these are just a few of the many types of stories that are recounted throughout the book.
By the time you’re finished with this book, you will feel like you knew Opal personally. I highly recommend this detailed account of Opal Corn Myers’ life. I am looking forward to reading it many more times!”
